The Akoya Pearl is a Saltwater Cultured Pearl made famous by "Kokichi Mikimoto" and is produced by the saltwater pearl oyster Pinctada chemnitzii or if grown in Japan Pinctada martensii this mollusc is smaller than the large tropical saltwater oysters that produce South Sea pearls and Tahitian black pearls. The Akoya pearl oyster grows slowly in the colder waters and produces small but gorgeous round white pearls highly prized as Akoya pearl stud earrings and delicate pearl necklaces. The cultured Akoya pearl is usually between 2mm and 11mm in diameter and is a “bead nucleated” pearl hence its round shape, however, more often than not the Akoya pearl will have a small 'tail' that makes it a 'baroque' shape, ideally suited to our unique Akoya pearl jewellery designs.
